Scott struggled to make sense of Vicky’s torrent of words. ‘So… he told you he’s met somebody else?’

‘He said it was my fault! He said he was happy until I kept questioning him all the time. He said I stifled him and in the end he decided he might as well find somebody else since I thought that’s what he was doing anyway!’

‘You… you’d better come inside and sit down,’ he said, leading the way to the living room. He hadn’t seen Vicky in years – he’d thought perhaps she would never contact him again – and yet here she was in his hallway, drenched after walking from her car up to his door in the rain, pouring out a long, muddled story about her break-up with a boyfriend that Scott had never even met.

‘I’ll make you some tea,’ he said gently. ‘You can start from the beginning.’

‘The beginning!’ she said. ‘Is that the beginning where you told me our friendship was toxic and you couldn’t be around me any more, so I ended up looking for comfort with a creep like Ollie? Or the beginning where I got fucking stabbed.’

Scott closed his eyes briefly. Don’t let her get to you. That’s what she wants. That’s why she keeps bringing it up.

‘You’re going to help me,’ she said. ‘You’re going to let me stay here until I get myself sorted out.’

‘Vicky…’

She glared at him. Her makeup was smeared down her cheeks, her red-blonde hair so wet it was almost black. Her situation was pretty bleak; could he really turn her away? The answer was simple. He couldn’t. ‘You can sleep in the spare room for a few days,’ he told her, ‘just until you find somewhere else to go.’

She fixed her gaze on him, her eyes full of old rage. It sent shivers down his spine. ‘I’m not going to say thank you,’ she said coldly. ‘You owe me. This is the least you can do.’
